Shirley Young, Making Artists into Ambassadors
Born to a diplomatic family in Shanghai, Shirley Young is the only Chinese vice president in the history of the General Motors Corporation. In 1990, Shirley’s conversations with the great architect Ieoh Ming Pei and cellist Yo-Yo Ma contributed to the establishment of the organization, 'Committee of 100”. This organization promotes the advancement of ethnic Chinese in all fields in America and also strengthens dialogue between China and the U.S. After Shirley retired in 2000, she has continued to work in fostering communication between the two countries via her rich personal resources and experiences. She has managed to bring many young Chinese artists to the world stage and to spread awareness of Chinese culture, and in the process, has also realized her childhood dream of becoming a diplomat.
